Shin splints are often referred to as pain in the lower leg. The pain is often along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia).
There are several causes for shin splints but the most common is physical activity, usually associated with running. Having flat feet or abnormally rigid aches, inadequate footwear, or running on hard surfaces are additional causes of shin splints.
- Pain immediately after training or workouts
- Isolated swelling of the lower legs
- Sharp, razor like or dull and throbbing pain
Treatment is almost always non-surgical and include, rest, ice, compression, and flexibility exercises. Increasing your duration, intensity, and frequency of your exercise regimen gradually can help prevent shin splints. Again, always remember to consult your orthopedist prior to starting any exercise program.
